Hello,

My name is Hajnalka Csilla (Sheila) Ignat, I am a Licensed Practical Nurse, skilled in foot care nursing, with knowledge and judgments required to provide safe and ethical care to clients. Until my dad was diagnosed with diabetes, we did not realize the importance of the health of the feet. The doctor warned us we would need professional help to take care of his feet. At that point, I realize how impactful foot care nursing can be. I decided to pursue foot care nursing to help others in need. I am Certificated of Participation Cracking the Dementia Code and Certificated of Participation Gentle Persuasive Approaches in Dementia Care, as well member of the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP), and the Lower Mainland Foot Care Nurses Association (LMFNA). If I can be of assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Warmest regards,

Csilla

    Diabetes and Foot Problems
Foot problems are very common in people with diabetes and can lead to serious complications. Calluses need to be treated early; these deformities present the same danger as having a rock in your shoes that causes repeated trauma to area of the foot. For clients with diabetes, calluses may be covering up much deeper wound or ulceration. Calluses, if not trimmed, get very thick, break down, and turn into ulcers. These slow -to -heal wounds can lead to infection. Because of nerve damage, people with diabetes may not immediately notice that there are problems with their feet. Patients with limited vision due to diabetes and other chronic diseases are difficult because they could not be able to evaluate their feet or cut their toenails properly. Even minor wounds can turn into serious foot ulcers. All this complications can be prevented by contacting a professional foot care nurse.

    Frequently Asked Questions

"Well informed clients are better equipped to make decisions regarding their health and well-being. To help you make a well informed decision, here are some important questions that are commonly asked." - Hajnalka Csilla Ignat

Why should I see a Foot Care Nurse?

A Foot Care Nurse is a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), or Nurse Practitioner (NP) they have specialized training to provide Advanced Foot Care. Foot Care Nurses take on further training and education of the anatomy/physiology of the foot and lower leg, and learned the proper skills necessary to care for their clients. Foot care is an essential part of all nursing care. We are focusing on prevention, education and treatment of diabetic foot complications.

Why should diabetics be more concerned about their feet?

Over time, diabetes may cause nerve damage, also called diabetic neuropathy, that can cause tingling and pain, and can make you lose feeling in your feet. When you lose feeling in your feet, you may not feel a pebble inside your sock or a blister on your foot, which can lead to cuts and sores. Cuts and sores can become infected. Diabetes also can lower the amount of blood flow in your feet. Not having enough blood flowing to your legs and feet can make it hard for a sore or an infection to heal. Sometimes, a bad infection never heals. The infection might lead to gangrene.

What can I expect from a foot care service?

Foot care begins with a complete detailed nursing assessment of client’s feet and including a health questionnaire and visual inspection. It includes a lower limb assessment, nail trimming, thinning of thickened nails, corn and callus reduction. Fungal nails, care for ingrown toenails, moisturizing foot rub. Keeping your feet more comfortable between visits is important as health teaching, recommendations, referrals and promoting overall safety and comfort in your life is valuable for me.

What can I do to keep my feet healthy?

Leaving the house for small but frequent walks and having a well-balanced diet will help keep your feet stay on the right track towards it being in good health. If you have issues taking care of your feet safely than I strongly suggest seeing a foot care nurse.

How long is a foot care appointment?

The first visit is usually a little bit longer since an initial assessment has to be obtained. Typically, the first visit is about an hour, depending on the foot care needed. Subsequent visits are shorter.

    How often should I rebook?

On average, we recommend an appointment every 6-8 weeks. If you or your loved one are at high risk (such as foot ulcers or neuropathy), we recommend every 4 weeks until the risk is mitigated.

Who provides coverage for these services?

Individual benefits plans may provide coverage. Please call your provider to confirm coverage. Clients receive a receipt after every visit in person or either by email. If you do not have a health insurance plan, please keep receipt for income tax purposes. You may claim these expenses on your taxes for a deduction.
